Chicago Fire Fall 2-0 On Road To New England Revolution

Harry Shipp

FOXBOROUGH, Mass.(June 13, 2015) – The Chicago Fire (4-8-2, 14 points) fell 2-0 to the New England Revolution (6-4-6, 24 points) on the road Saturday evening at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.

The Fire got their first look on goal in the 13th minute when Greg Cochrane, making his first MLS appearance of the season, whipped in a cross from the left and found Harry Shipp on the far post, but the Homegrown midfielder’s header sailed over the bar.

The Men in Red again threatened in the 24th minute when a Shipp restart found Guly do Prado on the left. The Brazilian striker volleyed it across the face of the goal, forcing a diving save from Revolution ‘keeper Bobby Shuttleworth, who got a hand on the ball and pushed the ball into the path of Kennedy Igboananike. The Nigerian striker got a quick shot off but it was blocked by a Revolution defender.

Postmatch Reaction

After a scoreless first half, the hosts opened the scoring in the 48th minute when a corner kick popped out to Diego Fagundez at the top of the 18-yard box. Fagundez unleashed a right-footed volley past an outstretched Jon Busch into goal.

The Revs doubled their lead just two minutes later when Teal Bunbury's errant shot was adroitly redirected into the net off the head of Charlie Davies, giving the Revs the 2-0 advantage.

With the Fire pressing to erase the deficit, second-half substitute Jason Johnson made his presence known with a pair of near-miss headers. The first came in the 79th minute when a charging Johnson latched onto a cross by Eric Gehrig and put his deflected header just wide of frame. The Johnson-Gehrig connection -- which also produced the Fire's game-tying goal at Columbus on May 22 -- nearly paid off once again in the 90th minute, when again Johnson outpaced his defender to the ball in flight and forced a quick-reaction save by Revs goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth.

Frank Yallop's side were without the services of a trio of regulars in Designated Players Shaun Maloney (Scotland)and David Accam (Ghana) as well as defender Joevin Jones (Trinidad & Tobago), all of whom are fulfilling international duty with their respective national teams.

The outcome extended the Revolution's home unbeaten streak to 17 matches, while the Fire were kept off the scoresheet for the first time in seven outings.

The Fire now face a quick turnaround before entering the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in the fourth round against USL side Louisville City FC at Toyota Park on Tuesday, June 16 at 7:30 p.m. CT.
