CHICAGO (April 6, 2014) – The Chicago Fire Reserves defeated Marquette University 4-0 Sunday morning on the Toyota Park Practice Field. Goals from Juan Luis Anangono, Victor Pineda, Andrew Gutman and Orr Barouch and a combined shutout from Kyle Reynish and Alec Kann led the Men in Red to victory.
The Fire opened scoring in the 40th minute when Gutman, a Fire Academy player, made a nice run down the left flank and sent in a low, driven cross that Marquette ‘keeper Charlie Lyon got a hand to, but Anangono pounced on the rebound for the first goal of the match.
Chris Ritter nearly doubled the Fire’s lead in the waning seconds of the first half when Benji Joya swung in a corner kick, but his header clanged off the crossbar.
In the 61st minute, Marco Franco dribbled down the right flank with pace and found Pineda at the top of the six-yard box. Pineda calmly redirected his right-footed shot past Lyon to double the lead.
The third Fire goal resulted from a nice combined effort from two Academy players. From the back Gutman received the ball and turned up field and found Qudus Lowal, who turned and carried the ball into Marquette’s half. With a perfectly-weighted ball, Lowal sprung Gutman behind the Marquette defense and into the box. Gutman raced into the 18 and deftly chipped the ball over Lyon for the third goal of the match.
The match would finish 4-0 when Barouch was awarded a penalty kick in the 80th minute after he was taken down in the box. Barouch stepped up and calmly converted the ensuing penalty kick for the final goal of the match.
The Marquette starting eleven featured four players with Fire ties, with Academy products Charlie Lyon, Brady Wahl and Louis Bennett and Fire PDL player David Selvaggi starting the match for the Golden Eagles.
