Mexico defeated the US men's national team 1-0 in the Concacaf Gold Cup final, their all-time leading 8th Gold Cup triumph. It's their first since 2015.

A match mired with fouls and multiple instances of players coming together after the whistle, it was just another chapter of the fierce US-Mexico rivalry.

LA Galaxy's Jonathan dos Santos scored the game-winner, a perfectly placed first-time finish into the top corner in the 73rd minute. Raul Jimenez assisted the goal with a deft backheel at the top of the box.

The USMNT started hot, with Christian Pulisic seeing a shot saved from the corner of the six-yard box in the 5th minute. A few minutes later, Jozy Altidore beat the last Mexico defender and was 1v1 with Memo Ochoa, though spun his shot wide.

In the second half, Jordan Morris saw his header from a corner get cleared off the line before dos Santos gave Mexico the lead.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: For Mexico, it's success at the first chance for new head coach Tata Martino. For the USMNT, was reaching the final without Tyler Adams and John Brooks good enough? It was the first tournament with Gregg Berhalter in charge, the beginning of this chapter of the rivalry.
  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: A goal worthy of a trophy.
  • MAN OF THE MATCH: Jonathan dos Santos capped a wonderful tournament with a match-winning performance. Outside of the goal, he helped control the midfield.
