WASHINGTON, D.C. (Oct. 7, 2018) – The Chicago Fire (8-17-7, 31 points) fell 2-1 to D.C. United (11-11-8, 41 points) at Audi Field on Sunday afternoon. Midfielder Raheem Edwards scored his first goal for the Fire in Sunday’s match, providing the game’s opening goal.
D.C. United appeared to find the back of the net in the 21st minute, but the goal was disallowed by the referee after a video review determined that a foul occurred during the run of play leading up to the strike.
The Fire opened the scoring in the 51st minute when midfielder Aleksandar Katai won the ball near midfield and raced toward the D.C. United goal, before finding Edwards on the left side of the 18-yard box. Receiving Katai’s pass, Edwards cut past two defenders and tucked his right-footed shot just inside the near post to give the Fire the lead early in the second half (VIDEO).
D.C. United was able to level the score in the 62nd minute when forward Wayne Rooney redirected a rebounded shot from close range (VIDEO). After earning a penalty kick, the home side was able to take the lead with 10 minutes remaining in the game, with Rooney converting from the spot in the 80th minute (VIDEO).
Following the international break next weekend, the Fire will travel to take on Atlanta United FC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. CT (ESPN+/Univision Radio WRTO AM 1200). Coverage begins at 1:45 p.m. CT with a live pregame show on ESPN+ presented by CIBC.
