Match Report: Fire defeat Earthquakes, 2-1

Alan Gordon

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (June 2, 2018) – The Chicago Fire (5-7-2, 17 pts.) defeated the San Jose Earthquakes (2-8-3, 9 pts.) 2-1 on Saturday evening at Toyota Park.

The Fire opened scoring in the 29th minute when Johan Kappelhof collected the ball and fed it out wide to Luis Solignac on the right flank. In his first start since returning from a left quad injury, Solignac whipped in a right-footed cross to Alan Gordon at the top of the six-yard box, who rose up and snapped his header down and inside the post for his third goal in as many games.

Aleksandar Katai doubled the lead in the 49th minute. In his second consecutive professional start, Brandt Bronico slid the ball through to Katai, who was racing into the Earthquakes’ penalty area. The Serbian took a short touch forward and with a right-footed far post finish, tallied his fourth goal of the season.

The Earthquakes pulled one back in the 74th minute with a right-footed Danny Hoesen volley from close range.

The Fire next travel to face Columbus Crew SC at MAPFRE Stadium in the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday, June 6 at 6 p.m. CT.

Three days later the Men in Red return to MLS action when they host the New England Revolution at Toyota Park for Pride Night on Saturday, June 9 at 7:30 p.m. CT (ESPN+/Univision Deportes Chicago 1200AM). Coverage begins at 7:15 p.m. CT with a live pregame show on ESPN+ presented by CIBC.
