WASHINGTON, D.C. (Aug. 27, 2016) – Playing their third match in eight games, the Chicago Fire (5-12-8, 23 points) fell 6-2 to D.C. United (7-8-11, 32 points) on Saturday evening at RFK Stadium. Michael de Leeuw and Razvan Cocis found the back of the net but a first half red card to Khaly Thiam forced the Fire finish the game with ten men.

Soon after Luciano Acosta opened scoring for the hosts in the 25th minute, Michal de Leeuw equalized in the 31st minute when a Luis Solignac shot was blocked and fell to Matt Polster, who chested it down and sent a volley from distance towards goal. D.C. United goalkeeper Bill Hamid made the initial block but the ball bounced out of Hamid’s hands and fell to de Leeuw, who buried his shot from just outside the six yard box.

Three minutes later, Thiam was shown a red card, forcing the Fire to play nearly an hour with the man disadvantage.

United forward Patrick Mullins scored his first goal of the evening in the 40th minute and added his second in the first minute of first half stoppage time. In the second minute however, de Leeuw played a short pass to Cocis. The Fire captain turned and sent a left-footed shot towards goal that was deflected off a defender and popped over Hamid to pull the Fire within one heading into halftime.

D.C. United scored three unanswered goals in the second half courtesy of Patrick Nyarko, Mullins and Nick DeLeon as the Fire dropped the road result.

Newly acquired forward David Arshakyan made his Fire debut tonight when he entered the match in the 56th minute for de Leeuw.

The Fire return home to host the Philadelphia Union at Toyota Park on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 7:30 p.m. CT (CSN+/97.5 FM Poder).
