Ramos selected to MLS Team of the Week

Rodrigo Ramos

After a 1-0 victory on Friday over the visiting San Jose Earthquakes, Chicago Fire defender Rodrigo Ramos’ performance earned him a spot on MLS’ Team of the Week for Week 17.

“I feel I needed to step up and help the team win the game, so I needed to push up a little bit,” Ramos said via translator after Friday’s match.

Ramos was consistent presence down the team’s right flank on Friday, combining well with midfielder John Goossens in the team’s transition from defense to attack.

“It’s one of my strengths to be strong up top," he said, "so I’m trying to use that to the team’s advantage."

Prior to his standout effort vs. San Jose, the 21-year-old Brazilian had recorded an assist in three consecutive matches played: at Colorado, at Philadelphia and vs. Columbus (U.S. Open Cup).

Goossens joined Ramos in receiving a weekly honor of his own, getting a Team of the Week bench nod for his efforts Friday night. His 58th minute goal ended up making the difference in the scoreline as the defense held to preserve the clean sheet. Goossens’ tally marked his first goal in MLS play. The budding chemistry between he and Ramos was a high point of discussion after the match.

“I’ve spoken with him,” Ramos said. “I feel like I’ve been getting better with other teammates too. I just have to get adjusted to the position that Goossens plays to see where he’s more comfortable.”

The pair will look to keep things rolling in a trip north to Toronto FC on Saturday. Match coverage begins at 6 p.m. CT on CSN Chicago.
