Chicago Fire pass, Soumare and Nyassi selected in Stage 2 of 2014 Re-Entry Draft

Soumare Nyassi DL

Like a number of teams, the Chicago Fire elected to pass in Stage 2 of the 2014 MLS Re-Entry Draft but two players that represented the club this past season were selected.

Center back Bakary Soumare was selected first overall by the Montreal Impact and seems likely now to reunite with former Fire head coach Frank Klopas in French Canada.

Having played for the club from 2007-09, Soumare returned to the Fire via trade midway through the 2013 season. Soumare exits the Fire having appeared in 129 competitive matches over the course of five seasons.

After the first run through of teams, midfielder Sanna Nyassi was also selected by the San Jose Earthquakes with their second pick of the phase two Re-Entry process.

Nyassi was acquired by the Fire from Montreal in exchange for fellow midfielder Dilly Duka this past summer. The Gambian international tallied one goal and one assist in 10 appearances for the club.

The MLS Players Union lists Soumare’s guaranteed compensation for 2014 at $370,000 and Nyassi’s at $154,625.

Gonzalo Segares, Patrick Ianni, Steven Kinney and Hunter Jumper passed through the Re-Entry process and are now available to any MLS team on a first-come, first served basis.
