IN GOOD HANDS WITH Dilly Duka
In his second full season with the Fire, Duka will man the right flank for the Men in Red. A young, talented midfielder, the former U.S. youth international enters his fifth professional season. Dilly talks with us about his unique name, his playing style, and his love for Inspector Gadget’s Gadget-Mobile.
Q. Tell me about your most memorable game or goal from your career.
It would have to be the first goal I scored in MLS. I was playing for the Columbus Crew, at Gillette Stadium against the New England Revolution. It was the second goal of the game, and we ended up winning. All my family and friends were at the game. They made the drive from New Jersey, and it was the perfect game to score because they made that drive.
Q. You played college soccer at Rutgers. What are your thoughts on the Scarlet Knights joining the Big Ten? Will you go see them when they’re in town?
I don’t know quite what to think about that. I think it will be good for me because I can watch the soccer program when they play out here. They’ll play against Wisconsin which isn’t that far and against Northwestern as well. Obviously it’s good for an East Coast college to be in the Big Ten as the media coverage will be a lot bigger now in the Tri-State area.
Q. What do you want to achieve in the next ten years?
I want to still be playing this game at the highest level. I think if I could achieve that I would be extremely happy.
Q. What is something unique or interesting about yourself that fans might not know?
My full name. I don’t know if all the fans know that, but there’s nothing more unique and different than a name you don’t hear all the time. It is Dilaver, and it comes from my Albanian heritage.
Q. Who is your favorite soccer player of all time and why?
My favorite player of all time is Zinedine Zidane. I first watched him in the 1998 World Cup and since then I just kept following his career. He’s so smooth and intelligent, and he’s a great player.
Q. If you had to compete on a reality show – which one would it be and why? American Idol?
I’m sure if I competed on American Idol, you would see me in some bloopers! A few years back I used to watch the Real World: Battle of the Sexes and the Challenge, where they do games and obstacle courses which I always liked. I think it would be fun to compete on that. I don’t watch those shows any more.
Q. You started your MLS career in Columbus, what are the biggest differences between playing for the Crew and the Fire? What do you like best about being in Chicago?
The biggest difference is the fans. In Chicago, whether we are home or away we get a great crowd to support us. Especially when we’re at Columbus, one of the things I noticed while playing there is how many people Chicago had in our stands. When we would play at Chicago, we had maybe 10 fans there. I would say the atmosphere in the stadium is a lot better in Chicago and the fans really follow us even when we’re away.
Q. Were you ever affected by a natural disaster such as a hurricane, a fire or a flood?
Fortunately, I have not been directly affected by anything like that.
Q. Let’s talk about cars. What type of driver are you? How would your teammates describe your driving?
I would say I am a good and safe driver. My teammates would say the same, or at least I hope they would.
Q. If you could take a road trip across the country. Where would you want to go? Where is just too far?
I would want to hit one of the bigger cities in the United States. If I were starting in Chicago, and had a couple buddies with me, I’d like to go to Cali. I’d like to tour around California for a while. There’s nowhere really too far, If I’m willing to go to Cali then nowhere is too far.
Q. How many cars have you purchased in your life, and what do you look for when shopping for a new car?
I’ve purchased two cars. Both are SUVs, I’m a big fan of SUVs. I feel like the room in an SUV is good, you can bring a lot of passengers with you and have room for whatever else you need to bring. And if anyone asks me to help them move? I throw them the keys and just say take it. That’s why I have two!
Q. What fictional car from TV or Movies do you wish you could drive? Why?
There’s a lot. Are you familiar with Knight Rider? I always wanted to drive the black Trans-AM. I’m talking about Kit. That car was sick because it had all these cool gadgets and could speak back to you. Another one would be the Gadget-Mobile from Inspector Gadget. And of course the Batmobile. I like the new Batmobile, with the jet engine on the back. I’d like to get my hands on any of those.
Q. What’s your favorite real car you’ve ever driven?
Well my favorite car is a Porsche 911 Turbo, I’ve been in it but have never gotten to drive one. It’s my favorite, good looking car with a great engine. It’s pretty quick.
Q. Tell me about a time you took a risk on the field. Was the risk worth the reward? How do you prepare yourself for the unexpected on the field?
I’m an attacking player; I take risks all the time. Whether it’s trying to go at my guy one versus one or trying to play that weave for a through-ball. I haven’t been on the field lately but I’ll tell you whenever I’m out there, I’ll go for it. If you want to win you’ve got to take the risk.

Fue el segundo gol del partido, y terminamos ganando. Toda mi familia y mis amigos estaban en el juego. Ellos hicieron el viaje desde Nueva Jersey, y fue el juego perfecto para anotar porque ellos hicieron el viaje.
P. ¿Tu jugaste fútbol en la universidad de Rutgers. ¿Cuáles son tus pensamientos sobre que los Caballeros Escarlatas se van a unir a la conferencia Big Ten? ¿Vas a ir a verlos cuando están aquí en la ciudad?

Mi nombre completo. No sé si todos los aficionados sepan, pero no hay nada más único y diferente a un nombre que no se escucha todo el tiempo. Es Dilaver, y viene de mi herencia Albanesa.
P. ¿Quién es tu jugador favorito de todos los tiempos y por qué?
Mi jugador favorito de todos los tiempos es Zinedine Zidane. La primera vez que lo vi en el Mundial del 1998 y desde entonces seguí su carrera. Es tan suave e inteligente, y él es un gran jugador.
P. ¿Si tuvieras que competir en un reality show - cuál sería y por qué? American Idol?
Estoy seguro que si yo compitiera en American Idol, ciertamente me vea en algunas metidas de pata! Hace unos años yo solía ver The Real World: Battle of the Sexes y The Challenge, donde hacen juegos y carreras de obstáculos, que siempre me han gustado. Creo que sería divertido para competir en eso. Pero yo no veo esos programas.
P. ¿Tu comenzaste tu carrera en la MLS con Columbus, ¿Cuáles son las diferencias más grandes entre jugar para el Crew y el Fire? ¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de estar en Chicago?
La mayor diferencia es la afición. En Chicago, ya sea que estemos en casa o fuera tenemos una gran cantidad de aficionados que nos apoyan. Sobre todo cuando estamos en Columbus, una de las cosas que noté mientras jugaba allí es la cantidad de gente de Chicago que estaba en nuestra tribuna. Cuando jugábamos en Chicago, teníamos unos 10 aficionados allí. Yo diría que el ambiente en el estadio es mucho mejor en Chicago y los aficionados realmente nos siguen incluso cuando estamos lejos.
P. ¿Alguna vez fuiste afectado por un desastre natural, como un huracán, un incendio o una inundación?
Afortunadamente, no he sido directamente afectado por nada de eso.
P. Hablemos de coches. ¿Qué clase de conductor eres? ¿Cómo describirían tus compañeros de equipo tu forma de conducir?
Yo diría que soy un conductor bueno y seguro. Mis compañeros de equipo dirían lo mismo, o al menos espero que lo hicieran.
P. ¿Si tu pudieras tomar un viaje por carretera atreves del país. ¿Dónde quisieras ir? ¿Dónde sería demasiado lejos?
Me gustaría ir a una de las ciudades más grandes en los Estados Unidos. Si yo estuviera empezando en Chicago, y tuviese un par de amigos conmigo, me gustaría ir a California. Me gustaría recorrer California por un rato. No hay ningún lugar realmente demasiado lejos, si estoy dispuesto a ir a California entonces nada es demasiado lejos.
P. ¿Cuántos coches has comprado en tu vida, y qué es lo que buscas cuando estas a punto de comprar un coche nuevo?
He comprado dos coches. Ambos son vehículos deportivos utilitarios, soy un gran aficionado de los vehículos deportivos utilitarios. Siento que el espacio en un vehículo deportivo utilitario es bastante bueno, puedo traer una gran cantidad de pasajeros conmigo y tener espacio para cualquier otra cosa que tu necesita traer. Y si alguien me pide que le ayude a mudarse? Les lanzo las llaves y les digo que se la lleven. Es por eso que tengo dos!
P. ¿Qué vehículo ficticio de la televisión o películas te gustaría poder conducir? ¿Por qué?
Hay un montón. ¿Está familiarizado con El Auto Increíble? Siempre quise conducir el Trans-AM negro. Estoy hablando de Kitt. Ese coche estaba enfermo porque tenía todos estos artilugios y podía hablar contigo. Otro sería el Gadget-Movil del Inspector gadget. Y por supuesto el Batimóvil. Me gusta el nuevo Batimóvil, con el motor a reacción en la parte posterior. Me gustaría hacerme con alguno de esos.
P. ¿Cuál es tu coche favorito que alguna vez hayas conducido?
Bueno, mi coche favorito es un Porsche 911 Turbo, he estado en el, pero nunca he llegado a conducir uno. Es mi coche favorito, es un coche que se mira bien y también tiene un gran motor. Es bastante rápido.
P. Háblame de un momento en que tomaste un riesgo en el campo. El riesgo valió la recompensa? ¿Cómo te preparas para lo inesperado en el campo?
Soy un jugador de ataque; Me arriesgo todo el tiempo. Ya sea tratando de encarar a un jugador o tratar de jugar el balón en el vacío. No he estado en el terreno de juego últimamente, pero te diré que cuando este ahí, voy a ir por todo. Si quieres ganar, tienes que arriesgar.
