IN GOOD HANDS WITH LOVEL PALMER
Jamaican international Lovel Palmer joined the Chicago Fire for his fifth MLS season in 2014. While he may be a self-proclaimed laidback guy, in his professional life, he’s anything but. Previously with the Houston Dynamo, Portland Timbers and, most recently, Real Salt Lake, Palmer has appeared in 96 MLS games playing across both on the back line and in midfield. Palmer talks about life in Jamiaca, his famous sister and his family away from home.
Q. Which is the goal or game that you remember the most?
I would have to say my first goal in MLS is the one I remember most. It was my first MLS start with the Houston Dynamo and I scored against Chivas USA. I think it was #6 for Goal of the Year. And I think that’s what really put Lovel Palmer on the map and introduced me to MLS.
Q. What do you want to achieve in the next ten years?
Winning the MLS Cup and bringing back that pride and joy to Chicago. After that, I hope to stay in Chicago and get involved in youth soccer because I really enjoy coaching kids and I would really like to be a mentor for as many kids as I can, just like my coaches were to me. I’d like to bring that purpose back to Chicago.
Q. Who or what inspires you and why? What is the most important lesson you learned in life?
My sister, Bridgette Foster-Hylton. She’s a five-time Olympian. She is a true role model because she showed me that with hard work, discipline and determination you can achieve your goal. Don’t put any limitations on what you can achieve in life.
Q. What is something unique or interesting about yourself that you have not shared in an interview yet?
It’s funny because I’m a professional soccer player and I don’t watch soccer. I’m not a fanatic like you’d think. There’s not really one sport I watch fanatically. I enjoy going to the stadiums, like I’d love to go watch the Bears and the Cubs. But to say I’m crazy about any one sport, I’m just not.
Q. When you were five years old, what did you want to be when you grew up and why?
To be honest, growing up in Jamaica as a five year old, it’s just care-free. The only things I looked forward to back then was walking to school with my friends, counting cars and looking forward to going home in the afternoon and having the TV to myself to watch my favorite show, Captain Planet. My older brothers played soccer, so they would go right to training and I would have the TV all to myself.
Q. Who would play you in an action film and why?
I really love Denzel Washington. He’s a great actor and I’d love for him to play me.
Q. Were you ever affected by a natural disaster such as a hurricane, a fire or a flood?
Yeah, I experienced a hurricane when I was four years old. I don’t remember much of it, but I definitely remember it. It was when I was down in Jamaica. We just got a lot of canned food in the house, made sure the roof and windows were sealed. Basically we prepared the house as best as possible to keep it safe so we wouldn’t lose our roof or windows. You just have to make sure there is no water that can get in. In the end, we were all safe.

Es curioso, porque soy un jugador profesional de fútbol y yo no veo fútbol. No soy un fanático como ustedes pudieran pensar. En realidad no hay un solo deporte que veo fanáticamente. Me gusta ir a los estadios, igual me encantaría ir a ver los Bears y Cubs. Pero decir que estoy loco por un solo deporte, yo no lo estoy.
