Chicago Fire Defeat Chivas Rayadas 2-0 in Desert Diamond Cup Finale

DDC

TUCSON, Ariz. (March 1, 2014) – The Men in Red defeated the Chivas de Guadalajara Developmental Team 2-0 Saturday evening in the Desert Diamond Cup championship match. Juan Luis Anangono’s bending goal in the 15th minute and Quincy Amarikwa's effort in the 90th minute led the Men in Red to their seventh victory of the preseason campaign.

The Fire opened scoring in the 15th minute when Patrick Nyarko picked off a slow Chivas pass and played a quick ball forward to Anangono. With a touch to settle, Anangono curled his shot around Chivas ‘keeper Raul Gudiño for the opening goal.

In the 52nd minute the Men in Red had an opportunity to double their lead when Nyarko was hauled down in the box and was awarded a penalty kick. Jeff Larentowicz stepped up for the ensuing kick but Gudiño guessed correctly and dove to his left to punch it out.

The Fire found the second goal of the game in the 90th minute when Benji Joya played a perfectly-weighted ball over the top of the Chivas defense to Amarikwa, who raced in towards goal and bent his left-footed shot past the onrushing Gudiño and into the back of the goal.

The Men in Red return to Chicago on Sunday and will train at the Bridgeview Sports Dome (8900 S. 77th Ave., Bridgeview, IL 60455) on Monday, March 3 at 10:30 a.m. CT before departing to take on Chivas USA at the Stub Hub Center on Sunday, March 9 at 2:00 p.m. CT (UniMas) for the first match of the 2014 MLS season.
