Goal Of The Year Day 9

GOTY 9

We experienced a major upset in Day 8 of the 2011 Goal of the Year tournament…for the first time in the competition’s history (dating back to 2010), a #4 seed defeated a #1 as Diego Chaves’ Capital Comeback winner October 15 at DC United took down Sebastian Grazzini’s late curling effort from October 12 vs. FC Dallas. It’s safe to say the drama behind that game, specifically that goal, may have aided the Fire’s Uruguayan striker. The result wraps up first round play and pushes Chaves’ into the Kubik Bracket final where he’ll meet #2 Marco Pappa’s individual effort on March 26 vs. Sporting KC, on Tuesday, November 15.

2011 FIRE GOTY - Day 9 - Which goal was better?

Heading into the regional finals, six players still remain with Dominic Oduro and Marco Pappa still holding two entries each. Chaves joins Sebastian Grazzini, Cory Gibbs and Jalil Anibaba in the Elite Eight.

TODAY’S MATCHUP:

We move back to the Nowak Bracket for our first regional final today as #1 Marco Pappa’s Hat Trick Clincher from September 28 at Real Salt Lake goes up against #2 Dominic Oduro’s Stealthy Flick from August 21 vs. Toronto FC. The winner will be crowned Nowak Regional champion and will move to the Final Four to take on the Armas champion next Wednesday, November 16.
