Sean Johnson looks on after a putt

After coming out of nowhere last year to win the starting job in Chicago, Sean Johnson came back down to earth earlier this season. A handful of poor performances landed him on the Fire’s bench just weeks after he earned his first USMNT cap in January. The experience will serve him as a reminder that despite his exceptional reflexes, he still has margin for improvement. With US boss Jurgen Klinsmann leaning toward D.C. youngster Bill Hamid as Tim Howard’s new back-up ‘keeper, Johnson still has a lot to prove heading into 2012.
What the TDs and coaches say: “Good size … Focused and hardworking. Has a great attitude. If he continues to improve on his decision making, he has great potential to be a very good ‘keeper in MLS … Sean needs more time … He’s had his ups and downs which is normal for a young guy but when he’s on his game he’s probably one of the better ‘keepers in the league with good upside … Like most young players, it’s the decision making that needs work – on the positions he takes up, how to distribute and whether he attacks a ball in the air or lets his teammates clear.”
