Goal of the Year Voting Day 6: Klopas Bracket -- #1 Brian McBride (10/23 at Chivas USA) vs. #4 Marco Pappa (4/17 at DC United)
In yesterday’s voting, Peter Lowry (10/8 vs. Columbus)
became the first two seed to advance in the Goal of the Year Bracket, defeating
3 Wilman Conde (8/21 at Houston), advancing to the final of the Kubik bracket
to take on #1 Marco Pappa (4/10 vs. San Jose) on Monday, November 22.
TODAY’s MATCHUP: Marco Pappa looks to advance his third of four entries as his #4seeded goal from April 17 at DC United takes on #1 Brian McBride’s back heel from October 23 at Chivas USA.
In the first of
three preliminary matchups this week between the club’s top two goal scorers,
Pappa’s third seeded winner from June 27 at New England upended McBride’s third
seeded goal from October 8 against Columbus on Monday.
Today’s entry from McBride is also the final goal of the
legendary American striker’s illustrious career. Like so many goal scored by
the club this year, this one came from an attack down the right. As Freddie
Ljungberg closed in on the touch line, he sent a centering pass to McBride who
back heeled the ball past Chivas keeper Zach Thornton to score the 80th
goal of his MLS career.
The third of four entries for the Guatemalan international,
Pappa’s strike was a big one as the club looked for its first win of the new
campaign. Locked in a scoreless draw late in the match at DC United, Nyarko
dribbled to the touchline and centered a pass across the box that McBride laid
off for Pappa. From the top of the 18 the third-year midfielder one-timed his
effort into the roof of the United net, beating veteran keeper Troy Perkins to
give his side the lead and first victory of the season.
The winner of today’s clash will take on #3 Steven Kinney
(9/29 at San Jose) in the Klopas Bracket final on Tuesday, November 23.
