Goal of the Year
Voting Day 5
We had our second upset of the tournament yesterday as #3
Marco Pappa (6/27 at New England) upended #2 Brian McBride (10/8 vs. Columbus).
The win is Pappa’s second of the tournament while McBride loses in his first of
three entries. The rivalry will continue later this week as the two will go
head-to-head on Wednesday and Friday.
TODAY’S MATCHUP: In the Kubik Bracket.#2 Peter Lowry (10/8 vs. Columbus) takes on #3 Wilman Conde (8/21 at Houston)
Peter Lowry’s 30th minute goal on October 8 will
live forever in Fire lore for a few reasons. First, it was the 600th
goal in Chicago Fire regular season history, but more importantly it stood as
the winner as the side defeated one of its biggest rivals to celebrate its
13-year anniversary.
All of that doesn’t even mention what a great, flowing goal
it was… Logan Pause switched fields in the attacking half, finding right back
Steven Kinney who played a deflected ball to Patrick Nyarko. The Ghanaian
winger one-touched a pass into the path of Peter Lowry who cut into the box,
turned U.S. international Chad Marshall and with the outside of his right foot,
curled his effort around onrushing Crew goalkeeper William Hesmer to put the
Fire ahead 1-0. Wow, did we do it justice?
Conde’s 81st minute goal on August 21 at Houston
served equal importance at its time. Down 2-0 after a drab first 50 minutes,
Calen Carr cut the lead to 2-1 in the 55th minute. Houston took back
a two-goal lead four minutes later when Brian Ching slammed a bicycle kick past
Sean Johnson. Patrick Nyarko forced a Houston own goal in the 69th
and then Conde came through with his powerful header off a Freddie Ljungberg
corner kick in the 81st minute to level the game at 3-3.
The Fire ended up losing 4-3 after Brian Ching completed his hat trick in the
85th minute, but nine minutes from time, Conde’s goal looked to be
the club’s saving grace after a poor start.
Voting will run through 10 am CT Wednesday! The winner
of today’s matchup will take on #1 Marco Pappa (4/10 vs. San Jose) in the final
of the Kubik Bracket next Monday, November 22. Check out the upcoming matchups by viewing our schedule and bracket!
