Chicago Fire Goal of the Year Tournament Voting Day 3
Fire rookie defender Steven Kinney pulled the
first upset of the 2010 Chicago Fire Goal of the Year voting tournament as his
third-seeded goal (September 29 at San Jose) defeated Freddie Ljungberg’s
second-seed. Kinney’s goal (with the ironic assist from Ljungberg) advances to
the final of the Klopas bracket where he’ll take on the winner of #1 Brian
McBride back heel (10/23 at Chivas) and #4 Marco Pappa’s roofer (4/17 at DC) on
Tuesday, November 23.
Today’s
Matchup: It’s Logs vs. Mini Logs… Wind vs.
Chest… In the Armas bracket, #1 seed Logan Pause’s rocket on May 8 at Toronto
goes up against #4 seed Peter Lowry’s chested finish on April 24 vs. Houston.
Often teaming together in central midfield this season, the lookalikes will do
battle in this all-important clash.
Nominated for MLS Goal of the
Year, Pause’s 51st minute strike from 30 yards out got a small bit
of help from the strong winds off Lake Ontario but left TFC keeper Stefan Frei
dumbfounded as the Fire looked to fight back from a 2-0 deficit. The goal
turned out to be the only bright spot in a disappointing 4-1 loss to the Fire’s
northern neighbors. It was also just the second of Logan Pause’s professional
career.
Things that are often underrated:
Velcro shoes, peanut butter and jelly, Peter Lowry and Peter Lowry’s scoring
ability. The Santa Clara University alum’s chested 67th minute goal
capped one of the most dominant Fire performances of the season in the club’s
2-0 win over Houston on April 24. Lowry is somebody that cares a great deal
about the environment and its quite obvious this goal on “Fire Goes Green”
night came straight from the heart. This is one of two entries Lowry has in the
2010 Goal of the Year Bracket.
The winner of today’s match up
will advance to the Final of the Armas bracket to take on the winner of #2
Marco Pappa’s free kick goal (6/9 vs. Colorado) and #3 Brian McBride’s header
(4/17 at DC) on November 29.
Voting will run
through 10 am CT tomorrow! Check up the upcoming matchups by viewing our schedule and bracket!
