Several Americans clocked in for midweek cup duty in Europe, with Jozy Altidore bagging Villarreal's goal in a 1-1 draw at Spanish third-division side Polideportivo Ejido in the first leg of the Copa del Rey round of 32.

The US striker converted a goalmouth feed from Jefferson Montero just before intermission to open the scoring, his first goal in nearly two years for the Yellow Submarine. The second leg of the Copa tie is scheduled for Nov. 10 at Villarreal's Estadio El Madrigal.

In English Carling Cup play, Brad Friedel made three top-shelf saves and Eric Lichaj went the distance as Aston Villa moved on to the quarterfinals with a 2-1 extra-time victory over Burnley.

In Scotland, Maurice Edu worked a strong 90 minutes as Rangers advanced to the semifinals of the Co-operative Insurance League Cup with a 2-0 victory at Kilmarnock.

Over in Germany, Michael Bradley went all 120 minutes and hit his side's next-to-last spot kick as Borussia Mönchengladbach ousted Bayer Leverkusen in a DfB Pokal shootout. Each club hit an extra-time goal before the hosts advanced 5-4 on penalties.

Heading to Belgium, Sacha Kljestan and Anderlecht are to the last 16 of the Beker van België thanks to a 5-3 penalty-kick shootout win at third-division UES du Centre. Kljestan made no mistake in opening the shootout for his side after regulation had ended 2-2.
