The third night of group matches of the 2010 SUM U-17 Cup took place Monday night at Centennial Park in Friendswood, Texas. The 16 teams are competing in four groups of four, with the group winners advancing to Tuesday's semifinals.
The weather and traffic delays on I-45 pushed the start time back for several of the matches, which were played with 35-minute halves after the first two nights of the tournament had 30-minute halves. Ties will be broken by a shootout, with the winning team earning two points and the losing team one point. Here are the results from the opening night:
Group A
Chicago Fire 2, Colorado Rapids 2 (Chicago won 5-3 on PKs)
In one of the best and most entertaining games of the day, Chicago rallied from a two-goal deficit to beat Colorado in a shootout and earn second place in the group.
Colorado took a deserved lead in just the 11th minute. Forward James Rogers made a 30-yard run with the ball and fed Dillon Serna in the box, where his shot was deflected for a corner kick. The ball bobbed around at the back post before defender Jordan Spring rose highest to head the ball through a crowd of players on the goal line and into the net. The Rapids struck for a second goal when a well-weighted long ball from Ricardo Perez found Rogers behind the offside trap, and he used a cool, low finish to make it 2-0.
While Colorado missed several above-average chances to add to the lead, with Chicago goalkeeper Sam Euler playing his part, the Fire got back in the game late. Substitute Kellen Gulley notched two goals, the latter a penalty kick with just two minutes remaining, to force the tie.
The shootout was not without controversy. Chicago's Euler - a shootout hero in the Fire's USSF U-16 championship - dove to his left to save Serna's shot on the second penalty kick, but the linesman flagged he had moved early, and Serna converted the second attempt. Chicago's third shooter, A.J. Jeffries, followed with a shot to the lower left corner that slipped through a loose net but did count as a goal. Euler then dove to his right to save the next shot, and Chicago confidently converted its last two shots for a 5-3 margin and one extra point.

D.C. United 1, San Jose Earthquakes 0
Likely needing a win to edge Chicago for the top spot in Group A, D.C. United earned its spot in the semifinals with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over San Jose. United, Colorado, and Chicago all had a chance to advance to the semifinals heading into the final day of group play, but a goal from Collin Martin sealed the win and a semifinal spot for D.C.
Martin's goal, scored in the second half, was created off a passing sequence out of the back, which involved Julian Griggs and led to a break down the left wing from Marco Hurtado. After racing by a defender, Hurtado sent a left-footed cross into the center that found Martin's feet. Martin settled nicely and quickly blasted a low, right-footed shot past goalkeeper Jesus Guzman. Led by Nathaniel Eggleston at center back, the D.C. defense held strong to preserve the shutout.

Columbus Crew 1, Seattle Sounders 0
In a winner-take-all match to determine the semifinalist from Group B, Columbus downed Seattle Tuesday night despite having less of the ball than their Pacific Northwest opponents.
The Crew took the lead five minutes after halftime when Will Trapp played the ball down the right, and Chris Davis broke in on goal and beat Seattle goalkeeper Rodney Greiling from a tight angle for his third goal of the tournament.
Seattle controlled the ball much of the second half, but Crew goalkeeper Nicholas Straight made a crucial diving save from a Seattle header in the 65th minute, and Columbus held on for the win and a spot in the semifinals.

Philadelphia Union 1, FC Dallas 0
New program Philadelphia got the better of more established FC Dallas in what amounted to a placement game Monday to finish third in Group B. Philadelphia opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Jimmy McLaughlin dribbled into the penalty area and cut the ball back to Darius Madison, who finished to give the Union the lead.
Philadelphia had another good chance shortly before halftime when Madison crossed to Melvin Snoh, whose header just went wide. The best Dallas chance to tie the game came in the 65th minute, when Samuel Coleman controlled a long ball down the wing and got his shot past the goalkeeper but pulled it just wide. The Union held on for its first ever win.

Houston Dynamo 1, Chivas USA 0
In an emotionally charged match that saw both teams finish with 10 men, Houston's difference maker - newcomer Tamay Sanchez - struck again to send the host Dynamo to Tuesday's semifinals.
After Chivas applied high pressure early in the match, the Dynamo settled down and created the better chances from the run of play, mostly through Sanchez. The decisive goal came four minutes into the second half, when substitute Alex Gonzalez played a long ball out of the back. Sanchez slipped past his defender to control the ball and break in alone on goal, then blasted a shot low and hard past Chivas goalkeeper Jake McGuire.
Later in the second half, each team saw a man sent off for a second yellow card, but the Dynamo held on through three minutes of stoppage time with the help of good ballhandling from goalkeeper Fernando Pina, and advanced to the semis.

New England Revolution 5, Toronto FC 2
New England broke out in a big way, pouring in four second-half goals from four different scorers to dominate Toronto FC by a 5-2 margin and finish in third place in Group C.
Tied 1-1 at the half, the Revolution got goals in the second from Peguy Ngatcha, Cole Denormandie, Diego Fagundez, and Felix DeBonna, who also scored the only first-half goal for the Revolution. While Toronto FC scored its first goals of the tournament, they were not enough to stop a spirited Revolution team in the second half.
Toronto's goals came courtesy of Kaheem Christopher and Eric Ngo. Toronto finished group play 0-3 but will have a chance to regroup in consolation games Tuesday and Thursday.

2008 SUM U-17 Cup champion Real Salt Lake advanced to the 2010 semifinals by winning Group D Tuesday, downing the Kansas City Wizards 2-0 to finish group play 2-0-1.
Controlling the game, RSL opened the scoring in the 27th minute when Richard Haddock broke in alone on Kansas City goalkeeper Jonathan Kempin and slotted the ball low inside the right-hand post.
Kansas City never seriously threatened to break through the Salt Lake backline, and RSL put the game away with a well-taken goal in the 49th minute, when Junior Jbopau crossed for Cole Nagy, who settled the ball on his chest, dribbled around Kempin, and slotted the ball home to wrap up Salt Lake's trip to the semis.

New York locked up second place in Group D with a penalty shootout win over the Los Angeles Galaxy Tuesday after a tightly-contested game.
The Red Bulls broke a scoreless deadlock in the 56th minute when Galaxy goalkeeper Alexis Padilla could not hold a cross, and New York's Brandon Allen tapped it into an empty net as Los Angeles players asked for a handball call.
The Galaxy tied it just four minutes later when the always impressive Dyllan Stevens met a corner kick with a header at the near post. New York goalkeeper Max Brown got a hand to the shot, which trickled through the six-yard box. As a New York player went to clear it off the goal line, the Galaxy's Juan Chavez dove to block the clearance with his foot, deflecting the ball off the ground and into the roof of the net for an awkward but crucial goal.
Los Angeles had the best chance for a winner, as Dennis Flores ripped a blast off the crossbar from 25 yards in the final minute. Instead of a dramatic victory, the Galaxy found themselves in a shootout, where the Red Bulls clinically converted all four chances, and Brown made two saves to give the Red Bulls an extra point in the standings.
