Gilberto Ready to Run with Chicago Fire

Gilberto

Gilberto just wants to be in Chicago.
The 26-year-old striker knew it was the place for him when he found out there was interest on behalf of the Fire. Not only had he been waiting for a chance to return to MLS after a stint with Toronto FC, but the newest Chicago Fire Designated Player also relishes the chance to be near one of his favorite childhood teams.
With the help of a translator, Gilberto spoke Thursday with media members for the first time since signing with Chicago.
"Growing up following the Bulls, I’m a big Michael Jordan fan,” he said. “I’ve always known that the city is a great city. When I learned that the Fire was interested in me, I didn’t have any doubts that I wanted to go there. The team is a very successful team. It’s had a great past. The fans are amazing. I had no doubts that I wanted to go to Chicago and be a part of the Chicago Fire.”

He’ll have to wait a little while before he can play in front of those fans at Toyota Park. The Fire are about to begin a stretch of three straight road games, the first coming at 10 p.m. CT Friday at Portland. Gilberto joined the team at their hotel late Wednesday and passed a physical, making him available to play at any time. It remains to be seen whether Frank Yallop's side, keen to earn its first road victory of 2015, will see the debut of their new striker at Providence Park.

Gilberto comes into the team following a successful loan spell with Vasco da Gama in Brazil, and he told reporters Thursday he’s match-fit and ready to contribute.
“I’m in very good shape,” he said. “I’ve been practicing. I’ve been training. I’ve only been away from training for a couple weeks, but I feel I’m good to go for the next game already. Hopefully I can get in and contribute and help the team get a win.”

Gilberto has high hopes for his time in Chicago. He plans to work hard to try and earn a regular starting spot. He wants to contribute on the scoresheet as he did with Toronto FC in 2014, when he notched seven goals and five assists. Most of all, he wants his work to be reflected in success for the team as a whole.
“The ultimate goal is just to help Chicago Fire,” Gilberto said, “and that’s the most important thing.”
