Joevin Jones Stars for Soca Warriors in Gold Cup Opener

Joevin Jones

Joevin Jones' teammates with the Trinidad and Tobago National Team saw firsthand Thursday night why Chicago is his kind of town.

Playing in the same city he now calls home, the first-year Chicago Fire midfielder and defender netted his first international goal and delivered a Man-of-the-Match performance for the Soca Warriors, leading T&T to a 3-1 win over Guatemala in the side's 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup opener at Soldier Field.

After Sheldon Bateau (11') and San Jose Earthquakes' Cordell Cato (14') scored early to put Trinidad and Tobago on the front foot, Jones delivered a veritable knockout blow in the 25th minute. Jones, playing in an advanced central midfield role, played a through-ball to Cato, who was met by a sliding Ricardo Jerez six yards from goal. Jones followed the action and was there to deposit the rebound with a left-footed blast for his first tally in a Soca Warriors shirt.

Jones, who earned his 39th career cap on the occasion, exited the match in the 80th minute.

With three points in hand, Trinidad and Tobago will depart Chicago and travel on to Phoenix, Ariz. for its next match in Group C action, facing Cuba at 5:30 p.m. CT on July 12. The Soca Warriors then will face Mexico on July 15 (7:30 p.m. CT) in Charlotte's Bank of America Stadium. Both matches will air live on FOX Sports 2 and Univision Deportes Network (UDN).
