Fire Advance to U.S. Open Cup Fifth Round with 1-0 Victory over Louisville City FC

CHICAGO(June 16, 2015) – The Chicago Fire defeated USL side Louisville City FC 1-0 Tuesday evening in the fourth round of the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. After a scoreless 90 minutes, Fire forward Quincy Amarikwa headed home the game winner in the 116th minute to help the Fire advance to the round of 16.

The visitors came close in the 22nd minute when midfielder Magnus Rasmussen unleashed a left-footed shot towards goal but it clanged off the cross bar.


Amarikwa, who was a persistent threat on the evening for the Fire, looked to open scoring in the 32nd minute when he capitalized on a defensive error and broke in towards goal but the ensuing shot went wide.


With neither side able to break the deadlock, the match rolled into two 15-minute overtime periods. With minutes remaining in the second overtime, Razvan Cocis brought the ball down for Guly do Prado. The Brazilian took a quick shot that popped up for Amarikwa to head home in the 116th minute.


The Fire will learn their next opponent on Thursday at 10 a.m. CT when U.S. Soccer holds the fifth round draw, which will be streamed live on ussoccer.com.


The Men in Red take a break from MLS action this weekend before hosting D.C. United at Toyota Park on Wednesday, June 24 at 7:30 p.m. (CSN+/ESPN Deportes 97.5 FM).

- With the win, the Fire move to 37-12-4 all-time in Open Cup play.
- The Fire are 24-1-1 in matches played in Illinois.
- Sean Johnson, who captained his side on the evening, moves to eighth all-time on the Fire’s Open Cup appearance list with 15.
- Designated Player Shaun Maloney made his U.S. Open Cup debut, returning from international duty with Scotland and entering the match as a second-half substitute. Maloney exited the game in the first period of extra time while coping with back spasms.
