Chicago Fire Soccer Club Signs Defender Marco Franco

Marco Franco

CHICAGO (February 25, 2014) – The Chicago Fire Soccer Club announced Tuesday that it has signed 2014 MLS SuperDraft pick Marco Franco. Per MLS and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Marco is an athletic, solid player and will add depth to our backline heading into the 2014 season,” said Chicago Fire Head Coach and Director of Soccer Frank Yallop. “From his performance at the Combine and throughout preseason, we are hoping Marco can transition from the collegiate level to the professional game."

A 22-year-old defender hailing from Chino Hills, Calif., Franco was selected 13th overall by the Fire in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft following a standout four-year career at the University of California-Irvine from 2010-2013. While at Irvine, Franco appeared in 76 matches and tallied ten assists. Franco capped off his collegiate career by leading a back line that posted 10 shutouts and allowed a Big West low of 77 shots on goal, garnering 2013 Big West Defender of the Year and First Team All-Big West honors.

Franco, a CZ Elite FC youth product, represented the OC Blues in USL PDL action.
