Chicago Fire Homegrown prospect Harry Shipp and the #3 Notre Dame Fighting Irish took one step closer to NCAA College Cup glory Sunday as they defeated #14 Wake Forest 4-2 at Alumni Stadium in South Bend, Ind.

Wake Forest grabbed the early goal through Michael Gamble 12 minutes in but the lead didn’t last as Notre Dame’s Patrick Hodan equalized two minutes later. Just before halftime the Irish took a 2-1 lead thanks to a Wake Forest own goal in the 52nd minute but the Demon Deacons equalized in the 62nd minute through Tolani Ibikunle.

The quality of Notre Dame came through the final 25 minutes as Evan Panken bagged the go-ahead goal in the 70th before Shipp iced the game off a Max Lachowecki cross in the 74th.

The win moves Notre Dame to 14-1-6 on the season and sets up a national quarterfinal matchup with Michigan State on Saturday at 6pm CT in South Bend.

Earlier Sunday in Charlottesville, Va., Academy products Bryan Ciesulka, Charlie Lyon, Brady Wahl, Louis Bennett II and Eric Pothast all took part in #9 Marquette’s 3-1 defeat to the University of Virginia.

With the Cavaliers running to a 2-0 lead by the 47th minute, the Golden Eagles pulled a goal back six minutes later through Redshirt Sophomore C. Nortey. The revival lasted shortly though as Virginia’s Todd Wharton converted a penalty kick just seconds later to close the scoring at 3-1.

Marquette ends a successful campaign where they won the Big East tournament title, their first ever NCAA College Cup match, a 1-0 overtime victory over Akron and finishes with a 13-6-2 overall record.
