Wells Thompson "disappointed" but accepts one-game suspension vs. Montreal

Wells Thompson

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- The Fire might have been a little lucky in not having to play a man down for much of Saturday's 1-0 win over Columbus after Wells Thompson escaped with only a yellow card for his 12th minute challenge on Crew defender Agustin Viana.
Thursday's news that the MLS Disciplinary Committee has suspended Thompson for Saturday's encounter at Montreal confirms the Fire might have dodged a bullet in the match.
Following training Thursday, Thompson admitted disappointment but accepted the decision that was handed down.

"I’d been praying about it all week hoping I wouldn’t get a suspension and thought I was actually in the clear," he told Chicago-Fire.com "I guess the coaches heard late Tuesday but you know I’m just disappointed, you get a string of games in and for me, for someone that hasn’t been playing that much is such a plus.

Due to a myriad of injuries in defense, Thompson found himself as the surrogate right back eginning with the team's 4-1 defeat to Chivas USA on March 24.
Since that loss, Thompson has improved every game and began making the position his own over the past four matches.
"You finally get comfortable with the position and I feel like I’ve been playing well. I just want to keep playing and I feel like it comes at a bad time but everything happens for a reason. I’m just going to take it and get back out there next week."
Thompson's absence Saturday will likely mean that Michael Videira or captain Logan Pause will fill in at right back.
In his only previous start of the campaign, Videira put in a solid effort there in the side's 0-0 away draw at Sporting KC on March 16 before leaving the match with concussion symptoms in the 83rd minute.
Part of the injury spell that saw Thompson move to right back, Pause looked to be the penciled-in starter at the position during preseason but since returning has featured in central midfield along side Jeff Larentowicz
