CHICAGO, IL(Jan. 10, 2012) – The Chicago Fire Soccer Club announced Tuesday the retirement of goalkeeper Jon Conway. A member of the 2011 Fire squad, the veteran ‘keeper brings to an end a 12-year MLS career that saw him capture two MLS Cups and one Nutrilite Canadian Championship.
“After talking to Coach Arena about the opportunity in LA and evaluating my options, it just felt like a good time to transition out of the game,” said Conway. “It’s been a pleasure to witness the growth of the sport and the league in the United States. I’d like to thank everyone who’s been a part of it, my teammates, my coaches, the fans and especially my family for supporting me throughout the years.”
A product of Rutgers University, Conway broke into the league with the San Jose Earthquakes in 2000 where he made 18 appearances over the course of five seasons, serving as a member of the 2001 and 2003 MLS Cup Championship sides. In 2005, Conway was traded to the New York Red Bulls. From 2006-2009, the Media, Penn. native appeared in 69 matches averaging a 1.34 goals against average. Conway spent 2009 with Chivas USA and 2010 with Toronto FC where he helped the Reds to the 2010 Nutritlite Canadian Championship.
“Jon Conway is a professional in every sense of the word,” said Fire head coach Frank Klopas. “Jon provided a veteran presence in our locker room and on the field. We wish him all the best in the next step of his career.”
The longtime MLS veteran came to the Fire via a trade from Toronto during the 2011 MLS SuperDraft and would go on to appear in six matches, earning one clean sheet in the Windy City.
