FC Dallas Reserves (3-3-0, 9 points) fell 3-2 to the Chicago Fire Reserves (6-1-1, 19 points) today on the adidas Field at Pizza Hut Park.
One of the top youth development systems in MLS, the FC Dallas Academy accounted for both of Dallas’ goals as Home Grown player Bryan Leyva and current FC Dallas Academy player Daniel Garcia each found the back of the net.
Diego Chaves scored both of Chicago’s first-half goals, just two minutes apart. The game winner was scored by one of Chicago’s youngest players, Orr Barouch, who calmly finished off a chance in the 69th minute on an opportunity created by Home Grown player Kellen Gulley.
FC Dallas nearly found the back of the net in the 22nd minute when high pressure in the center of the pitch caused a turnover. Leyva collected the loose ball and played a pass to guest player Lance Dempsey, who dribbled right before playing a pass to his left for Jonathan Top. Dribbling across the top of the box, Top hit a shot back across his body to the far post. Rising high to Chicago Fire goalkeeper Jon Conway’s left side; the shot just missed the upright.
On the ensuing goal kick, the Chicago Fire Reserves played direct to goal. The visitors gained an opportunity inside the area, off to the right side of FC Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz. Chaves collected the pass with a defender on his back, turned and fell to the ground following a challenge from FC Dallas’ Zach Loyd. Referee Jared Peeler immediately pointed to the spot, awarding the Fire Reserves a penalty kick. Chaves opted to take the kick, converting the opportunity with a low strike that slipped under the right side of Seitz to give Chicago a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute.
Chaves struck again in the 27th minute. The goal followed an FC Dallas free kick from midfield, which was headed out of the area, springing a quick counter attack. The initial charge was snuffed out by a backtracking FC Dallas defender only to have the blocked shot return to the feet of Chaves. The quick second shot redirected off an FC Dallas defender, crossing up Seitz before settling into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.
FC Dallas cut the deficit to one goal in the 31st minute when left back Moises Hernandez tossed a throw-in to midfielder Jair Benitez on the left flank. Benitez found Leyva’s feet with a pass in on the floor before Leyva knocked the ball around one side of his defender, cut around on the opposite side and picked out the far post with a low strike to bring the score to 2-1.
The Fire Reserves had the first good chance of the second half in the 50th minute. On the play, an FC Dallas giveaway in midfield led to an open cross fromthe right flank by Mike Videira. The looping cross to the far post set up a Barouch header, but unfortunately for the forward, his header skipped just wide of the post.
FC Dallas Reserves countered in the 59th minute on another chance sparked by a Hernandez throw-in. Second half substitute Ruben Luna posted up his defender in the box, collected the pass from Hernandez and fed a charging Victor Ulloa, who was making a well timed run off of Luna. Despite the strong combination play from the three FC Dallas Home Grown players, Dallas did not pick up a goal on the play as Ulloa’s shot sailed over the crossbar.
Chicago netted its second two goal lead of the day in the 69th minute, when a well timed run by Gulley was rewarded with a through pass that found the forward in space. Gulley calmly drew a defender before dishing a lateral pass to Barouch, who finished high to the right side of FC Dallas goalkeeper Josh Lambo.
FC Dallas fought back with a goal in the 85th minute scored by Garcia. The play began with buildup down the right flank that resulted in a nice move towards the end line and cross by Andrew Wiedeman. The cross found Garcia unmarked at the back post and the 18 year old finished with a textbook header to make the score 3-2 with five minutes remaining in the contest.
Dallas had the better of the play in the waning minutes, but could not gain any clear shots on goal as Chicago held on for the 3-2 victory. FC Dallas Reserves are back in action this Sunday, Sept. 25 against the Houston Dynamo Reserves. That match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. CT on the adidas Field at Pizza Hut Park.
