Trial By Fire

2011 Chicago Fire Open Tryouts

The odds of landing a spot with the Chicago Fire soccer team might seem remote, but that hasn't stopped Andrew Lichaj from chasing the dream. The 23-year-old midfielder recently joined more than 200 hopefuls as the Major League Soccer team held an annual open tryout for a shot at joining the parent club at training camp.
"It's a big deal," said Lichaj, older brother of U.S. national soccer team member Eric Lichaj. "I've been pretty much playing soccer my whole life, and the ultimate goal would be to make the Fire." Lichaj helped Downers Grove South win a 2004 high school state championship and captained Illinois Institute of Technology last fall, scoring seven goals in his final college season.
