Today’s Matchup: Armas Bracket - #2 Marco Pappa free kick (6/9 vs. Colorado) vs. #3 Brian McBride (4/17 at DC United)
In the final first round matchup of the 2010 Chicago Fire
Goal of the Year bracket, we have the rubber match between Pappa and McBride.
Nominated for four and three goals respectively, the club’s top two goal
scorers in 2010 have already faced each other twice this week with Pappa’s June
27 goal at New England upending McBride’s October 8 goal vs. Columbus on
Monday. McBride returned the favor on Wednesday as his back heel vs. Chivas USA
on October 23 beat out Pappa’s goal on April 17 at DC.
Pappa’s goal, his first of two in the 2-2 draw with
Colorado, was a simple thing of beauty.
Settling the ball on the restart, In what will be the easiest assist of
Baggio Husidic’s career, Pappa stepped up and hit a low shot between Mehdi
Ballouchy and Omar Cummings that Matt Pickens couldn’t reach, tying the score
at 1-1 in the 23rd minute.
In McBride’s goal on April 17, Fire goalkeeper (and former
high school quarterback) Andrew Dykstra pulled the equivalent of a Hail Mary,
booting the ball 70 yards from goal and finding the head of the legendary U.S.
striker. Having misjudged the ball, United keeper Troy Perkins was off his line
and out of position as McBride’s header trickled past him to give the Fire a
2-0 edge and their first win of 2010.
The winner of today’s matchup will advance to the Armas
Championship where they’ll take #1 Logan Pause (5/8 at Toronto) on Monday,
November 29.
