Clint Dempsey was the star of Fulham's 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic over the weekend, bagging two first-half goals. His performance earned lofty praise from one English pundit, Jamie Redknapp, the former Liverpool star and son of Tottenham manager Jamie Redknapp who writes a column for the Mail on Sunday.
"Clint Dempsey is the best American to have played over here," Redknapp wrote. "Consistently, he performs well, scores goals and can either lead the line, play deeper, or play wide."
The most prominent American players to have played in the English top flight include forward Brian McBride, who also played for Fulham, and current EPL goalkeepers Brad Friedel (Aston Villa) and Tim Howard (Everton).Landon Donovan and Joe-Max Moore also played for Everton and current Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Kasey Keller had a long career in England with five different clubs.
