Former Fire strikers Dipsy Selolwane and Tomasz Frankowski hit the back of the net in their respective team’s victories this past week.
Currently playing for SuperSport United in the South African Premier League, Selolwane played the full 90 in his club’s 2-1 win over Mpumalanga Black Aces last Wednesday in Pretoria. Currently positioned 11th in the table, the win stands as SuperSports first points of the season, rebounding from their 3-0 opening day loss to Witts University on August 28. Selolwane and SuperSport are back in action this Saturday as they visit cross-town rivals and league-leading Mamelodi Sundowns.
Veteran Polish striker Tomasz Frankowski scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season on Saturday, hitting the winner in Jagiellonia Bialystok’s 2-1 come-from-behind win at home against Wisla Krakow. Their fourth win since a scoreless draw with Slask Wroclaw on August 8, the victory keeps Jagiellonia at the top of the Polish Ekstraklasa with an undefeated 4-0-1 record as they travel to take on Arka Gdynia on Friday.
Former Fire attacker Cuauhtemoc Blanco went the full 90 minutes in Irapuato’s 1-1 draw with Pumas Morelos Saturday afternoon in Cuernavaca in the eighth round of Mexico’s Liga de Ascenso. After starting slow at the beginning of the season, Irapuato has taken 10 points from their last five matches, currently sitting seventh with eight matches played. Blanco will look to build up his two goals this season as he pays a visit to his former club, third-place Veracruz this Saturday.
Defender and U.S. Men’s National Team captain Carlos Bocanegra went the full 90 at left back in St. Etienne’s 1-0 victory at French Ligue 1 table-toppers and previously undefeated Toulouse Saturday night. Since making the summer move from Stade Rennes to Saint-Etienne, Bocanegra has played in four of his new club’s five league matches, helping Les Verts to a 3-1-1 record and third place in the early season Ligue 1 table. Bocanegra and Saint-Etienne will look to build on their victory when they host Montpelier this Saturday at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.
Malian international Bakary Soumare went the full 90 on the backline in US Boulogne’s 1-1 draw with Le Mans Friday. Electing to stay with Boulogne despite when they were relegated in May, Soumare has appeared in all six games, playing in every minute of his club’s current Ligue 2 campaign. The result takes Boulogne to 2-0-4 on this season, with their 10 points currently good enough for fourth in the Ligue 2 table. Soumare and Boulogne will continue to look for a quick return to Ligue 1 this Friday as they host Laval.
Having recently joined German Bundesliga side Hannover 96, winger DaMarcus Beasley suited up for the north German club for the first time, but did not play in the team’s 2-2 draw with Bayer Leverkusen. At 2-0-1 Hannover sit fourth in the early Bundesliga table and Beasley will hope to make his debut this Saturday as the 96ers visit Wolfsburg.
Paraguayan midfielder Lider Marmol (2008) was in the 18 but did not play for Mexican First Division side Atlante in their 1-0 loss to Estudiantes on Saturday. Sitting at 1-3-1, Atlante will look to gain points this Saturday as they host Monarcas Morelia.
