The Chicago Fire Soccer Club announced today that it will play a friendly match against the NSC Minnesota Stars at NSC Stadium in Blaine, Minnesota on Sunday, June 20 at 5:00 PM. The Fire will challenge the Stars during MLS' first-ever World Cup break.
The NSC Minnesota Stars were founded in 2010 and play in the USSF Division 2 Pro League. The Stars are coached by former Fire midfielder Manny Lagos, who appeared 10 times with the Fire from 1998-99.
The Fire match will mark the first time a MLS team has played at the National Sports Center (NSC) since June 2009, when the Minnesota Thunder played the Kansas City Wizards. It is also the first time the NSC Minnesota Stars will play against an MLS opponent.
The match against the Minnesota Stars marks the second time in 2010 that the Fire will play a USSF Div 2 side, during the 2010 Preseason the Fire defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps 4-1 in an exhibition match in Phoenix, AZ.
