Academy Takes 7

Academy Story

Fresh off a combined eight points against last weekend against Real Colorado and Colorado Rush, the Chicago Fire U16 and U18 Academy teams took another seven points from this past weekend’s matches against their MLS Academy counterparts from Colorado and Kansas City. Below is a quick recap of all four games.
Saturday

Colorado Rapids U16 0-2 Chicago Fire U16

The Fire U16’s gave Colorado fits very early Saturday morning when striker Elliot Borge tallied 12 seconds in the match at Argo High School. Straight from the first whistle, the Fire set into the Rapids half where left back Eduardo Cuautle slipped a through ball into the box for Borge who sent a powerful low strike past Rapids keeper Alex Chapin in the 1st minute.

Borge found the back of the net again just before the interval. This time it was right back Keaton Albert pushing up the right and sending a dangerous cross to Borge at the left side of the six-yard box. Borge headed back across the goal to beat Chapin and take the Fire into the half 2-0 up in the 39th minute.

Colorado took more control of the game in the second half but Fire keeper Zak Allen was equal to everything including a 71st minute breakaway from Rapids forward Idrissa Camara. In 1v1 on Allen the Fire youngster came off his line and denied the effort but was injured on the play and made way for Robert Euler to enter the match in the 74th minute. Euler helped preserve the shutout in combination with Allen, making one save in reserve.

Colorado Rapids U18 1-1 Chicago Fire U18
A chippy affair which the Fire U18’s dominated in shots 18-6, the home team could only come away with a 1-1 draw.

The Fire struck first in the 25th minute when winger Emanuel Guzman crossed from the right, finding his counterpart on the left Arturo Garza, who sent a header to the opposite side netting  to beat Rapids keeper Christopher Couperus. The goal stood up and took the Fire into halftime at 1-0.

The Fire came out of the break looking to finish off Colorado but were unable to finish on any of their 10 second half shots. Couperus made five saves to keep the Fire from tallying again.

The missed chances paid their toll in the 71st minute when substitute Jesus Ilenanas pounced on a loose ball at the top of the 18 and powered a low right-footed blast past Fire keeper Charlie Lyon.

Looking to respond it was Gutierrez crossing and finding Garza again in the 85th minute, but the winger hit the ball off the Rapids cross bar. A minute later Couperus made a point blank save on Fire striker Patrick Doody’s effort and the match ended 1-1.

Sunday
Kansas City Wizards U16 1-0 Chicago Fire U16

The Fire paid the price for not being able to finish, losing to the Kansas City Wizards 1-0 on a 60th minute goal from defender Andrew Brown.

The goal was one of Kansas City’s few chances in the match and resulted from a scramble in the Fire box, a through ball hit the back of the leg of one of the Fire defenders and fell to Brown who coolly finished past Robert Euler.
“Sunday’s game was by far the best match the 16’s have played all year,” said Academy assistant coach Tony Kees. “We had lots of scoring chances and our backline played flawlessly but they capitalized on one opportunity and that was the game.
