Jalil Anibaba

Hailed as the 2011 MLS Combine MVP, defender Jalil Anibaba’s rookie MLS campaign in Chicago proved quite successful with the University of North Carolina product tying Chris Rolfe’s record of 29 appearances, while setting a new record of 2508 minutes played by a Fire rookie. Playing primarily as a center back during his collegiate career, Anibaba began the 2011 season as the team’s starting right back to provide more backline versatility before moving centrally midway through the campaign. With a successful premier campaign under his belt, Anibaba will be key to helping the club make a return to the MLS Cup playoffs in 2012.

2011: Appeared in 29 matches, starting 27 over 2508 minutes, all ranking him second among Fire defenders behind only Gonzalo Segares…Recorded two goals and one assist in the league splitting time between right back and central defense…Tallied his first career assist on Dominic Oduro’s 89^th minute strike in a 2-1 loss 4/17 vs. LA…Became just the fourth Fire rookie and first defender all-time to tally a brace, scoring two first half headers in a 3-2 victory 10/22 vs. CLB…LAMAR HUNT U.S. OPEN CUP: Joined goalkeeper Sean Johnson as the only two players to appear in all six qualifying and tournament matches, logging 385 minutes…Scored a 40-yard rocket which stood as the game-winner in a 2-1 victory 3/30 vs. COL in a qualifying match played at Shea Stadium in Peoria, IL…The strike was later voted the club’s 2011 Goal of the Year by Fire supporters…INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLIES: Started both matches, logging 133 minutes combined in a 3-1 loss 7/23 vs. Manchester United at Soldier Field and a 1-0 loss 9/14 vs. Chivas de Guadalajara at Toyota Park.

2010: Transferred to the University of North Carolina for his senior season, appearing in 24 matches while helping the Tar Heels to their third straight NCAA College Cup appearance.
