Chicago Fire Sign Ecuadorian Striker Juan Luis Anangonó

CHICAGO, Ill. (Tuesday, July 23, 2013) – The Chicago Fire Soccer Club announced Tuesday that the club has signed Ecuadorian striker Juan Luis Anangonó from Argentinos Juniors in Argentina’s Primera División. Anangonó will be added to the Fire’s roster pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P1 Visa, and will occupy a Designated Player slot. Per club and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Anangonó will begin training with the team Tuesday at the Toyota Park Practice Field.
“Juan Luis is a young, up-and-coming goal scorer who is technically gifted and can hold the ball well,” said Fire President of Soccer Operations Javier Leon. “He provides us with attacking options and will bolster our squad, not only for the second half of the season, but for the future.”
The Ibarra, Ecuador product made his professional debut at the age of 19 for Guayaquil side Barcelona Sporting Club on Feb. 16, 2008. Over the course of two seasons, Anangonó scored eight goals across 32 matches.
Anangonó then joined Nacional in 2011 where he appeared in 72 matches and scored 30 goals before going on loan to Argentinos Juniors.
At Argentinos Juniors, Anangonó scored five goals in 32 matches.
A U-20 Youth International, Anangonó made four appearances for Ecuador in the 2009 South American U-20 Championship. Anangonó has one cap for the senior Ecuadorian Men’s National Team, appearing in a 1-1 World Cup Qualifying draw against Argentina on June 11, 2013.
