Thanks Diego

Fire, Chaves mutually part ways

A report today claims (SPANISH) former Chicago Fire striker Diego Chaves has signed for Chilean Primera División side Palestino. On a one-year contract with the Fire in 2011, the Uruguayan striker officially leaves the club having tallied six goals and one assist over 29 regular season matches in 2011.

He also scored the game winner in a 1-0 win over the Rochester Rhinos in a 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup third round match, played June 28.

“Diego Chaves was signed for the 2011 campaign,” said Fire head coach Frank Klopas. “We had conversations with Diego throughout the offseason, however, with recent signings of Rafael Robayo and Federico Puppo coming into the fold it became difficult to bring him back. We wish him the best with his new club.”

Chaves became the first player in club history to score in each of his first three regular season appearances and also tallied late game-winners in consecutive end-of-season matches, a 2-1 come-from-behind victory October 15 at DC United and a 3-2 win October 22 vs. Columbus.
