Howard, Everton top Liverpool

Several Americans suited up in Europe on Sunday, with Tim Howard backstopping Everton to a 2-0 derby victory over Liverpool.

The US No. 1 did not have the busiest of days, but came up with a couple of late stops to preserve the shutout. The win catapulted the Toffees out of the drop zone, with the added bonus of leaving their local rivals stuck in the mire.

Over in Germany, Michael Bradley notched a stoppage-time free-kick assist, but Borussia Mönchengladbach still came up short in a 3-2 decision at Hoffenheim.

Next door in France, Carlos Bocanegra and second place Saint-Étienne took an early lead, only to go a man down soon after and eventually fall 2-1 at Nice.

Finally, in Norway's top flight, Clarence Goodson saw yellow and played a part in the late equalizer as IK Start battled to a wild 3-3 draw at Kongsvinger. The US defender chested down a 77th-minute free kick in the area and his deflected volley fell kindly for an easy Mads Stokkelien conversion.
